Safety on LockinTown
LockinTown puts you in a room with other people, so it has tools to keep that room calm. This page explains, in plain words, what you can do, what the app does for you and what other people can see.
No camera, no microphone
There is no video and no voice in LockinTown. The site tells your browser not to allow the camera or the microphone, so nobody can see your face or hear you. People in a room see your character, not you. Talking happens in short text messages, and you can also send a quick wave, nod or cheer.
Blocking
You can block someone from their player card in a room, or from your friends list. Blocking works at the level of the room itself:
- If either of you has blocked the other, the two of you are not placed in the same room. If a room has someone you blocked, the app puts you in another copy of that room instead.
- If a block happens while you are already in the same room, you stop seeing each other's chat and emotes for the rest of that stay.
- A blocked person cannot enter your private room.
- The app never tells the other person that a block is the reason. They just find the room full or see a different one.
You can see your blocked list and unblock someone later.
Reporting
If someone is rude, spamming or doing something else you do not want to see, open their player card or a chat message and choose Report. You can pick Rude or mean, Spam or Something else.
- Reporting also blocks that person for you, so you do not have to do both.
- The report saves that person's recent chat lines from your room, so our team can see what happened. Reports are kept for our team to review.
- If three different people report the same person within 24 hours, and the reports include chat from that person, their chat is muted for 24 hours automatically.
- Each person can send up to 10 reports a day, so the tool stays useful and hard to abuse.
You can also report a server (a community) if it breaks the rules.
Chat rules the app enforces
Some rules are built in so you do not have to deal with them yourself:
- Messages are short, up to 160 characters, and the number you can send each minute is limited.
- Links are not allowed in chat or in room titles.
- Messages, display names, tags and room titles are checked against a list of unkind words. If one matches, it is not sent or not accepted.
- A muted person cannot chat until the mute ends.
No filter is perfect, which is why blocking and reporting are always one tap away.
Pictures
Pictures in LockinTown are limited to a few places: a server's banner or icon, pictures in server chat and challenge banners, and an optional ID photo on your profile. The ID photo is your character's portrait, not a photo of you taken by a camera.
Uploaded pictures are checked automatically before anyone else sees them. Pictures that are clearly not allowed are rejected. Pictures the check is unsure about are held back, hidden from everyone, until a person on our team approves or removes them.
What other people can see
LockinTown is social, so some of your profile is visible to the people you share rooms and servers with. That includes your display name, @username, your character, your country flag, your focus timer and session state, your streak and focus stats, your current tag or goal, and the messages you post. Write only what you are happy to share.
You do not have to give a real name. You can sign in with Google or Apple, or use LockinTown as a guest.
Your privacy choices
- The public homepage. By default, the front page can show that "someone in your country" is focusing and for roughly how long, with no name, picture or username. You can turn that off in Settings.
- Showing yourself on the homepage. Your first name, ID photo and goal appear there only if you switch on "Show me on the LockinTown homepage." It is off until you do.
- Analytics. Analytics on the website run only after you accept them in the cookie banner.
- Deleting your account. You can delete it in Settings, or by emailing hello@lockintown.app. The delete account page has the steps.
- Your data. The privacy policy lists what is collected, why and who it is shared with. It says that personal information is never sold and that there are no third party ads.
If something goes wrong
Use Block and Report first. If you need to reach a person, write to hello@lockintown.app. You can also read the terms of use for the rules everyone agrees to, and the about page for who is behind the app.
